War Games

KARS_1104-EditThe game of cirit being played in Başköy near Kars, Turkey.  Cirit, a traditional Turkish equestrian team sport played outdoors on horseback, was played by in Central Asia as a sporting and ceremonial game and it was brought to Anatolia during the westward migration in the beginning of the 11th century.  Cirit was played to improve the cavalry’s attack and defense skills, and during campaigns to whip up their enthusiasm for battle.   The objective is to score points by throwing a blunt wooden javelin at the opposing team’s horsemen. This process of chasing and fleeing, while trying to hit an opponent with a stick, is the essence of the game, which requires skill and sportsmanship.
