Ancient Ani

KARS_1559Ani is a ruined medieval Armenian city in northeastern Turkey on the Armenian border.  It was the capital of the Bagratuni Armenian Kingdom between 961 and 1045, had a population of 100,000-200,000 people at its height and was called the “City of 1001 Churches.”  Its many religious buildings, palaces, and fortifications were amongst the most technically and artistically advanced structures in the world.  Today the site is littered with the ruins of its magnificent buildings.
